WHAT IS THE WORKING KAT ADOPTION PROGRAM?

The Working Kat Adoption Program aims to find adopters for cats who won’t thrive in a normal home environment as companion animals. This program specifically places cats that come into our shelters, who are unsocialized and not bonded to humans (sometimes referred to as feral), into alternative living situations. These include enclosed properties such as barns, yards outside homes, warehouses, churches, factories or other facilities. This way, healthy unsocialized cats can flourish, working alongside humans to control rodent populations. Help save a life today! Adopt a Working Kat!

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO ADOPT WORKING KATS?

Cats participating in the Working Kat program are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped and ear tipped before going to new homes. The adoption guidelines are the same for all Animal Services’ cats, except adoption fees are waived!

Working Kats are best acclimated when adopted in pairs to keep each other company. Our staff will select cats for you based on compatibility.

Upon adoption, adopters need to transport their working cats in sturdy airline-approved plastic carriers.

For proper acclimation into their new environment, working cats should be limited to an enclosed space (approximately 14 x 14 feet) for two weeks.

If the property does not have an enclosed space, and/or the adopter does not have access to sturdy plastic carriers, large crates and/or carriers can be loaned by the department. Adopters will be required to return this equipment once the cats are comfortable in their new home.

HOW DOES AN ADOPTER CARE FOR WORKING CATS?

Adopters are given instructions on how to introduce their working cats to their new environment during the first two weeks and how to transport cats for veterinary care, should medical care become necessary.
Working Kats need to be fed, sheltered and provided care like any other pet. They must have access to an enclosed structure for shelter.
