Officer Responds to Home of Deceased Man

July 6, 2020

Retrieves Dog; Owner may have succumbed to coronavirus

Officer John Hergenreder of Animal Services responded to a Jurupa Valley property yesterday evening (July 2) after we received a call from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. A man died in his home and authorities discovered a dog inside the residence.

The 1-year-old poodle mix was in a crate inside the home, located in the 6700 block of Mann Avenue.

Officer Hergenreder donned protective gear as a precaution. The cause of death was unknown, but the man reportedly had been suffering from “flu-like” symptoms for the past three weeks. He had missed work for the past week. Officer transported the dog to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley where it was placed in an isolation kennel area and signage was posted for his colleagues, marking the dog as possibly owned by someone exposed to the coronavirus.

The owner was 46 years old.

The video link includes my colleagues, Senior Animal Care Technician Aimee Hoesman holding and comforting the dog as Registered Veterinary Technician David Urrutia examined the pooch and provided vaccinations and medications. I captured these images earlier today.

Thank you for reading this note. We hold out hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
