More Than 300 Pets Adopted Saturday

August 22, 2017

Clear the Shelters Event Produces Massive Crowds

Riverside County Animal Services’ shelters welcomed hundreds of would-be adopters during Saturday’s Clear the Shelters event.

The nationwide event led by NBCUniversal-owned television stations and locally by NBC4 Southern California and Telemundo 52, raised awareness about shelter pets and the need for adopters. Riverside County charged adopters just $4.52, a special nod to both NBC4;s and Telemundo Channel 52’s campaign efforts.

This is the third annual Clear the Shelters event and Riverside County Animal Services has participated since the first year. More than 60 shelters participated in Southern California, including Riverside County Animal Services’ locations in Jurupa Valley, Thousand Palms and San Jacinto.

All told, Riverside County’s three shelters coordinated 345 adoptions on Saturday (Aug. 19). Dog adopters once again topped cat adopters. The official tally was 263 dogs and 82 cats; also finding a forever home: one goat and one red-eared slider turtle.

“The total adoptions figure is just humbling,” Animal Services Director Robert Miller said. “Our communities came together in support for Riverside County’s homeless pets. What an amazing turnout. We want to thank all of our adopters that were part of this day.”

The 345 dog-and-cat adoptions fell shy of last year’s Clear the Shelters record for Riverside County Animal Services when 358 dogs and cats found loving homes.

A breakdown of this year’s shelter-by-shelter comparison follows.
Coachella Valley Animal Campus (Thousand Palms): 63 dogs, 17 cats.
San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus (San Jacinto): 42 dogs, 33 cats.
Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter (Jurupa Valley): 158 dogs, 32 cats.
