Homeless Pets Ready for ‘Clear the Shelters’

August 15, 2017

Special Adoption Rates – Just $4.52 – on Saturday

Three Riverside County animal shelters are participating in the “Clear the Shelters” event, a national adoption promotion spearheaded by NBCUniversal television affiliates.

NBCUniversal stations are promoting the “Clear the Shelters” day – Saturday, Aug. 19th – to raise awareness about homeless pets. The hope is the event spikes thousands of adoptions throughout Southern California and beyond. The stations are running on-air promotional spots, advertising campaigns and reporters are visiting shelters to do live shots.

To mark the day, Riverside County Animal Services is offering a very special adoption rate – just $4.52 – at its three largest shelters. The Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus in San Jacinto and the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley will offer the special rate. The latter two shelters open for business at 11 a.m. The Coachella Valley Animal Campus starts adoptions at 10 a.m.

The adoption fee of $4.52 is a special nod to Los Angeles-based KNBC Channel 4 and KNBC’s Spanish-language sister station, KVEA Telemundo Channel 52.

The Coachella Valley Animal Campus is located at 72-050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms, 92276.

The San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus is located at 581 S. Grand Ave., San Jacinto, 92582.

The Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter is located at 6851 Van Buren Blvd., Jurupa Valley, 92509. (One very important note for visitors of this shelter that day: the main shelter also runs a vaccination & microchip clinic on the third Saturday of each month; these clinics – running 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – are extremely popular and that means parking will be challenging that morning. We are offering our apologies in advance; visitors will likely have to use our overflow area, a dirt lot adjacent to the shelter.

One additional note: Arriving hours earlier than the shelter opening to stand in line outside the shelter does not equate to adoption of a specific pet. If two people happen to be at the shelter at about the same time, and they are both interested in the same pet – and both qualify as adopters – a special drawing will be held, giving both people the same chance for the pet.

“Last year’s success resulted in more than 8,200 animals finding forever homes locally and we’re thrilled to continue the effort to help many more homeless animals,” said NBC4 President and General Manager Steve Carlston. “NBC4 is proud to help make such an impact for this important cause.”
