Veterinary Employee Fostered Special Dog
An officer brought in the broken dog. A veterinarian handled the necessary surgery.
And a registered veterinary technician answered the call when the dog needed a special foster parent.
The male dog, a wire-haired, 2-year-old, tan terrier, was picked up by Riverside County Animal Services Officer Shirley Rivera on Jan. 12 after she responded to a service call in the unincorporated Perris area.
The dog was immediately examined and it was determined that the dog’s right, rear leg was fractured. He was placed on strong pain medications.
Despite the injury and all that he was enduring, the dog always showed affection to shelter employees. One employee in particular, Supervising Registered Veterinary Technician Katherine Buff, could not resist fostering the dog she would soon call Petey Pi.
“He always showed so much love to everyone, even though he suffered such a severe injury,” Buff said. “He is an amazingly sweet dog.”
Buff fostered the dog prior to its surgery. Then, on Feb. 7, after the injured leg was amputated, she fostered him again to make sure he healed properly.
“We love him, but it’s time he find himself a permanent home,” said Buff, who already has three dogs and a cat at home. “I always save room at our home for the possibility of fostering one dog – and that was Petey Pi this time. It’s time that he finds his forever home now. We’ll miss him very much, but he’ll make an awesome pet for another family.”
Buff nicknamed the dog Petey Pi, a mathematical wink-wink to the dog’s current predicament of having three legs. Or, as she put it, “3.14 legs.”
Interested adopters can send a short note explaining why he/she will provide the best home for Petey Pi. Correspondence can be sent to [email protected] or interested adopters can schedule a meetup time with Petey Pi at the shelter by sending a request to [email protected]. If more than one family qualifies for the adoption, a special drawing will be held to determine Petey Pi’s new home.
