An emu was impounded today by two Riverside County Animal Services officers. A Good Samaritan confined the roaming emu in a five-acre ranch property, near Jojoba Hills Circle and Soaring Hawk Road in the Aguanga area, southeast of Hemet.
We first heard about the roaming emu over the weekend when someone called us. An officer responded but the emu could not be located. Today, thanks to the owner of the ranch property, the emu was safe inside the fenced land. The owner of the land also provided the 5-foot bird food and water.
Two animal control officers were able to easily place the emu inside a trailer and transport him to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus in San Jacinto this morning. It is at the San Jacinto shelter where employees will care for the bird until the rightful owner shows up to redeem their unique pet.
“We definitely believe the bird to be a pet,” said Carra Mathewson, one of the officers that retrieved the emu. “He’s definitely very tame. Someone owns him and somehow he got loose. Either that, or he was purposely abandoned. But we’re hopeful that somehow the bird just managed to roam and the owner is out looking for him.”
