NOTICE: A Riverside County horse has been infected with the neuropathogenic form of equine herpes

The California department of food and agriculture has reported a horse has been infected with the neuropathogenic form of equine herpes virus in Riverside County, at premises described by the department as a multi-discipline equine facility. "At this time we are not aware of any links to the Orange County incident," a spokesman said.

The Riverside County gelding in question was tested after displaying poor hind limb co-ordination and urine dribbling. He became recumbent and had to be euthanized.

Horse owners are once again cautioned about this disease and are advised to limit the contact their horses have with other equines and to exercise appropriate bio-security measures.
