FAQs #21-30
21. How much does it cost to quarantine my animal?
Generally, quarantine is accomplished at home on the owner's property, which would require a one-time inspection fee of $20.00. However, if the animal is quarantined at a Riverside County Department of Animal Services shelter, there will be a pick up fee, an impound fee, and daily kenneling costs which must be paid.

22. Is it true that any shelter animal is euthanized after being held for the owner to reclaim after 5 or 10 days?
No. No adoptable animal is euthanized at Riverside County shelters. Animals are evaluated and some may be found to have health or behavior issues that would deem them not to be adoptable. However, when resources including time, money and space allow; animals that can be rehabilitated and made available for adoption are provided this opportunity.

23. Why do we have to spay or neuter an animal before it can be adopted?
All animals that are adopted from the City/County of Riverside Animal Services must be spayed or neutered before they go home in order to comply with California law. On a more personal note, consider these facts: a. A spayed or neutered animal has a more friendly, mellow temperament. b. An unsprayed or unneutered cat will roam an area of 10 miles, while a spayed or neutered cat will only roam about 2 square blocks. c. By spaying and neutering your animals, you†re preventing them from contributing to the pet over-population problem which will cut down on the number of animals that come into the shelter, giving the ones that are here more of a chance at being adopted.

24. How old does an animal have to be in order to be spayed or neutered?
Cats and dogs can be spayed or neutered as early as 2 months old.

25. What vaccinations are required by law?
The law requires that all dogs be vaccinated for rabies. Vaccinations for cats are recommended, but not required by law.

26. What vaccinations are recommended for my dog and cat?
Recommended for dogs: DHLPP (Distemper/Parvo), Corona Virus, Bordatella (only if your dog will be boarded, at dog shows or around other animals)
Recommended for cats: FVRCP (Distemper), Rabies, Leukemia (for outside cats only)

27. What other types of animals do you pick up?
The Animal Control Officers pick up livestock, deer, opossums, skunks, snakes, birds, etc.

28. If my dog is licensed, can it run without a leash?
According to California law, dogs must be kept on a leash when they are anywhere in public. The only time that they are to be without a leash is when they are in the house or within your property line limits.

29. Will my dog be put to sleep at the end of quarantine?
It depends on the circumstances, but usually the dog will not be put to sleep when it comes out of quarantine.

30. I just received a citation for not renewing my dog's license. Do I have to go to court?
If you take care of the citation within 10 days of the date that it is written, it will not be sent to the court.
