FAQs #11-20

11. We have been noticing a lot of coyotes in the area lately. Who do we call? Contact California Department of Fish & Game at (909) 484-0167. They are located in Long Beach, but will be able to connect you with a local trapper.
Also, see Urban Coyotes a Danger to Small Pets.

12. How old does my dog have to be before I have to get him licensed?
All dogs that are 4 months old or older must be licensed in the City and County.

13. Are you the people that pick up dead dogs?
Yes, as long as they aren't on the freeway. To have an animal picked up on the freeway, please call Cal-Trans at (951) 383-6819.

14. Do cats have to be licensed?
No, it is not required for your cat to be licensed, but it is a good idea to have a tag on them so that they can be identified and returned to you if lost. Additionally, we strongly recommend having cats and dogs microchipped and provide this service at our Riverside County shelters for the low cost of $15.

15. How long does it take to respond to a call?
All calls are handled by degree of priority.

16. I forgot to renew my dog's license. Will I be charged a late fee?
If you live in an Unincorporated Area of Riverside County or in the City of Riverside, you will only be charged a late fee if your license is 30 days past due.
If you live in a city, check city policy.

17. Do you administer the rabies vaccine? How much does it cost?
Yes, we have low-cost, walk-in vaccinations in our Riverside City/County Animal Shelter on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, 9am-12pm and 1pm-3pm. At this same location, we have low-cost Vaccination Clinics on one Saturday of each month where we administer rabies and other vaccines. (see dates, times and prices on the Events page of this website) For those living in the Coachella Valley, we encourage you to contact our partner, Animal Samaritans, who also provide low cost vaccinations.

18. I'd like to complain about my neighbor's dog barking incessantly, but I don't want them to know that it was me. What should I do?
You cannot remain anonymous when filing a Noisy Animal Complaint as your neighbors need to know who they are disturbing.

19. Can I get a discount when I purchase my dog license?
Yes. In the unincorporated areas of Riverside County there are a few ways that you can get a discount: Having your dog spayed or neutered will reduce your licensing fee drastically! (County Residents: save $42 on a 1 year license, $85 on a 2 year license & $131 on a 3 year license. A Senior Citizen discount is given for anyone over the age of 60 (bring a drivers license or proof of age when you purchase your license).
If you live in a city, check city policy.

20. What is the cost for having Animal Services pick up a stray animal?
If the owner of the animal isn't known, then there is no charge. If the animal is not a stray, but being turned in by the owner, the cost to have Animal Services pick it up is $30.00.
