FAQs #1-10

1. Do I have to come to the Shelter to license my dog?
No, you may print out a licensing application from this website and mail it to us, along with the appropriate fees and paperwork (rabies certificate, proof of spay/neuter, proof of owners age if wanting a Sr. Citizen discount). We will mail the animal tags, along with your paperwork and the receipt back to you.

2. What paperwork do I need to bring with me in order to get a license for my dog? Do I need to bring the dog with me?
You will need to bring your dogs current rabies vaccine certificate and proof that your animal was spayed or neutered (if applicable). You do not need to bring your dog with you to get the new license.

3. How many dogs am I allowed to have on my property?
If you live in an unincorporated area of Riverside County, you may have up to 4 dogs before needing to apply for a Kennel License. An adult dog is any dog over the age of four months. If you live in a City in Riverside County, the number of animals you can have will be specified in the City Ordinance. For example, in the City of Riverside, there is no limit. (More info about city ordinances: Cities in Riverside County)

4. What can I do about my neighbor's cats coming onto my property?
You can post your property to advise neighbors that you will be trapping and then place a humane trap on your property. Humane traps can be purchased at feed stores, or there may be a limited supply of traps available at your local Riverside County shelter and arrangements may be made to loan or rent them to you depending on your city of residence. Please feel free to contact us.

5. How many cats am I allowed to have on my property?
If you live in an unincorporated area of Riverside County, you may have up to 9 adult cats before needing to apply for a Cattery License. An adult cat is any cat over the age of 4 months. If you live in a City in Riverside County, the number of animals you can have will be specified in the City Ordinance. For example, in the City of Riverside, there is no limit.
(More info about city ordinances: Cities in Riverside County)

6. How long is a rabies vaccination good for?
The initial rabies vaccine given to your dog is valid for 1 year. After that, a rabies booster shot is given, which is good for 3 years.

7. If I live in the City of Riverside or County and my livestock (cows, horses, bulls, etc.) get loose, where will they be taken?
If you live in the City of Riverside or western part of the County, your animal(s) will be taken to Norco Animal Control (909-737-8972). If you live on the east part of the County (Coachella Valley/Blythe area), they will be taken to the County of Riverside Coachella Valley Shelter ((760) 343-3644).

8. Who do I call if I find a beehive at my house?
Contact Vector Control, a division of the County of Riverside Department of Environmental Health. There are three numbers for Vector Control due to the different areas that they service. Riverside County Vector Control in Hemet area call: (951) 766-9454. Northwest Mosquito and Vector Control in Corona area call: (951) 340-9792. Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control in Indio area call: (760) 342-8287.

9. I'm moving and can't take my animals with me. Can I put them up for adoption?
The Department of Animal Services accepts all animals and must hold them as state law requires. During this time, the pet is evaluated for medical and behavioral issues to determine if the pet is suitable for adoption. All adoptable animals will become available for adoption to a new home.

10. I recently moved to the County of Riverside from another county. I had my dog licensed at our old residence, will that license be valid for Riverside County or do I need to get a new one?
If you have moved to an unincorporated area of Riverside County, the license from your previous residence will be valid for up to 1 year. If that license expires in less than 1 year, you will need to purchase a Riverside County license at the time of expiration. If your current license is valid for more than 1 year, it will only be accepted for 1 year from the date that you move to the County.
If you have moved to a City within Riverside County, the licensing requirements are determined by the City you have moved to, please contact the city for further information (More info about city ordinances: Cities in Riverside County)
